Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Joel 2:28-29 'And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. (NIV) Acts 2:14-18 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. (NIV) The baptism of the Holy spirit was prophesied in the old testament time. It was the power of the Holy Spirit coming upon those who believed after Jesus purchased liberty for us.
John 20:21-22 Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. (NIV) Luke 24:49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." (NIV) Acts 1:5-8 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." 6 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (NIV) The disciples salvation experience came right after Jesus returned to earth the first time. They indeed received the Holy Spirit when they believed, but then Jesus told them to stay in Jerusalem until they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 1:15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) (NIV) Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. (NIV) Acts 10:44-48 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days. (NIV) No. You have to be a believer in order to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit not the other way around. The disciples who were first baptized were believers when they were baptized in the Holy Spirit. Also, the gentiles who Peter water baptized had received the Holy Spirit, so Peter and those with him knew they were already saved, so they water baptized them. When Paul went to Ephesus (Acts 19:1-7) he found BELIEVERS who weren’t baptized with the Holy Spirit.
How do I receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit? Luke 11:9-13 "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (NIV) You simply ask for it. You know what you receive is a good thing, because of the goodness of your father. I heard that baptism of the Holy Spirit wasn’t for today. Is that true? Acts 2:38-39 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off-- for all whom the Lord our God will call." (NIV) Throughout the Bible the message is clearly that God is not a respecter of persons. It says the “last days’ in Joel, not the last day - singular. It is for “all whom our Lord will call”. Are you the “called” of God? Then it is for you and any who are the “called” of God..
Acts 2:4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. (NIV) Acts 8:14-19 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money 19 and said, "Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." (NIV) [This passage only indicates there was some evidence, as Simon saw something that let him know something had taken place] Acts 10:45-47 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." (NIV) Acts 19:1-6 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." 3 So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied. 4 Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. (NIV) In all the cases recorded, there was evidence that the believers received baptism of the Holy Spirit. Where the evidence is defined, the evidence that was consistent was the evidence of speaking in tongues. Also note how concerned the disciples were in these instances that the believers had in fact received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. They made special issue to make certain that they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Why do I need it? or What will the baptism of the Holy Spirit do for me? Acts 1:8 But you will receive power [1411 dunamis (doo'-nam-is);from 1410; force (literally or figuratively); specially, miraculous power (usually by implication, a miracle itself): KJV-- ability, abundance, meaning, might (-ily, -y, -y deed), (worker of) miracle (-s), power, strength, violence, mighty (wonderful) work.] when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (NIV) Acts 2:43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. (NIV) 1 Cor 12:1,7-11 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines. (NIV) The key is the word “power” It is the signs and wonders that draws the unsaved, and it is the power that gives our ministry it’s strength. You need the baptism of the Holy Spirit to be equipped to do the ministry of reconciliation. It is the power to be a witness to demonstrate the power of God and to “edify” or build up the body of Christ. Without it you’re left with only your natural power. A poor substitute for what God can do. If baptism of the Holy Spirit is valid, why do some churches preach against it? [Class discussion] There are many reasons that churches and believers don’t enter into the things God has for them. Not the least of these is fear and unbelief.
1 Cor 14:2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. (NIV) 1 Cor 14:14-15 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. (NIV) [Class discussion] Why should I speak in tongues?
